Visiting Phuket in October: Weather & Best Rainy Day Activities

484

October in Phuket brings warm weather, tropical showers and opportunities to enjoy both outdoor attractions and indoor activities. Rainfall and sea conditions can vary throughout the month, so a flexible itinerary is especially useful for families.

Thai school holidays and the 23-25 October 2026 long weekend may bring more visitors during selected periods. This guide covers what to expect from the weather, activities to consider with children and practical ways to plan a family stay in Patong.

Phuket weather in October

October remains part of Phuket’s wetter season, with warm, humid conditions and a mix of showers, cloudy periods and sunshine. Rain can be brief and heavy, but longer wet spells are also possible.

Conditions may improve as the island moves towards the dry season, although late October does not guarantee clear skies or calm seas. Choose your travel dates around your family’s schedule and keep outdoor plans flexible.

Check the local forecast before each outing and use dry periods for beach visits or sightseeing. Keep an indoor alternative nearby so you can adjust your plans if the weather changes.

October at a glance Typical
Daytime high About 31°C
Night-time low About 24°C
Rainfall About 270 to 380 mm
Rainy days About 19 to 25
Sea temperature About 29°C
West-coast sea Improving, still unpredictable

October sits at the end of the rainy season in Phuket, which runs roughly from May to October. September is usually the wettest month, so October often starts wet and eases off.

If your dates are flexible, book the second half of October. Early October often feels like an extension of September, while late October usually brings calmer seas and the first hints of high season.

Phuket October 2026 dates to plan around

October 2026 includes two public holidays, school breaks that vary by school and the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. These dates may affect accommodation demand, traffic and activity availability.

Date Event What it means for families
1 Oct Maya Bay reopens Phi Phi trips land again
10 to 18 Oct Phuket Vegetarian Festival Processions mainly in Phuket Town
13 Oct King Bhumibol Memorial Day Take 12 Oct off for four days
15 Oct Similan Islands reopen Late-October day trips
23 Oct Chulalongkorn Day Three-day weekend, 23 to 25 Oct

Festival dates follow 2026 announcements and match the lunar calendar, so check the Tourism Authority of Thailand listing before you go.

If you want to visit with kids during the festival, read our Phuket Vegetarian Festival guide and keep these in mind:

  • Decide on processions in advance. Devotees in trance can be intense for younger kids.
  • Pack ear protection for the firecrackers.
  • Wear white to join in, as locals do.
  • Look for yellow flags, which mark jay (vegan) food stalls.

If you already live in Phuket, turn the long weekend into a Phuket staycation, with our family restaurants in Phuket listed for meals out.

What to do in Phuket in October with kids

The best October days in Phuket have two plans: one for sun and one for rain, both easy to reach from Patong. Start outdoors in the morning and keep an indoor option lined up for the afternoon.

Rainy periods are a good opportunity to enjoy indoor activities at the resort or explore nearby shopping and dining options.

  • FunLAB Digital Interactive Hub: Enjoy interactive entertainment during opening hours. Admission fees and age requirements apply.
  • Kids’ Club: Children can join age-appropriate activities during opening hours, subject to the club’s admission and supervision policies.
  • Jungceylon: This shopping centre in Patong offers shops, restaurants and indoor entertainment a short journey from the resort.
  • Phuket Old Town: Choose a café or another indoor stop during heavier rain, then explore the streets when conditions improve.

When the sun is out: October's day trips

Sunny mornings are for October's reopened day trips.

  • Maya Bay reopened on 1 October 2026 after its annual closure from 1 August to 30 September, so Phi Phi day trips include it again.
  • The Similan Islands reopen on Thursday 15 October 2026, a date set by Thailand's Department of National Parks. Expect a long transfer, a speedboat ride, and choppy seas early on, so the trip suits older kids in late October. Park fees are THB 500 per adult and THB 250 per child aged 3 to 14 (foreign visitors).
  • Andamanda water park makes an easy half-day between showers.
  • Calmer snorkelling closer to Phuket is covered in our guide to the best snorkelling in Phuket.

Local tip: Choose a boat operator with clear weather-related cancellation and rescheduling policies. Reconfirm departure arrangements and sea conditions before your trip.

Is the sea at Patong safe for kids in October?

On rough days, the sea at Patong is not safe for children to swim. In October, west-coast beaches such as Patong, Karon, and Kata get strong waves and rip currents, so always follow the beach flags and the lifeguards.

  • Read the flags. A red flag means no swimming.
  • Swim in the pools instead. The Family Pool, the Toddler Pool for under-5s, and the Splash Zone give kids sheltered water play every day, whatever the sea is doing.
  • Enjoy the sand anyway. Sandcastles, shell hunts, and sunset walks all work when swimming doesn't, and our beachside spot in central Patong keeps the beach a short stroll away.
  • Know the beach before you go. Our Patong Beach guide covers the beach in more detail.

Plan your October family break

October rewards families who stay flexible. Plan mornings outdoors, keep a rain plan ready, and aim for the second half of the month if your dates allow. With FunLAB, the Kids Club, and the Family Pool, Toddler Pool, and Splash Zone on site, even the rainiest afternoon still ends with happy kids.

Check family room availability and book direct with Holiday Inn Resort Phuket before you arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Is October still rainy season in Phuket?

Yes. October is generally part of Phuket’s wetter season. Expect warm, humid weather with showers and occasional longer periods of rain. Sunshine is still possible, but dry weather and calm seas are not guaranteed. Check local forecasts and marine advisories before outdoor activities.

Is Phuket busy in October?

October is generally less busy than the peak travel months, although visitor numbers vary by area and date. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, Thai school breaks and the 23-25 October 2026 long weekend can increase demand. Book accommodation ahead for popular dates and choose activities with flexible weather policies.

What should I pack for Phuket in October?

Pack light, breathable clothes, a compact umbrella or light rain jacket, and waterproof sandals for wet streets. Add a dry bag for phones and high-SPF sunscreen, because UV stays strong even on cloudy days. For kids, bring plenty of swimwear for daily pool time. Our full Phuket packing list covers the rest.
